7 Steps to Making and Keeping New Year's Resolutions Revealed by NJ Fitness Expert Carey Yang

Before you jump in to make another round of New Year's resolutions, spend some quiet time by yourself to review what you have accomplished this past year and what the mistakes you made.

The majority of people don't learn enough from their mistakes or their accomplishments. It's like everyone is simply plugging along with their heads down.

Instead of repeating the same old day over and again, most people seem to repeat the same outlook, approach, and strategies.

You and I both know that no matter how good or bad your results were this year - you can always do better.

The single biggest key to improving both your performance and your results seems to go ignored by almost everybody. If you want to be at the top of your game you absolutely must review, analyze, and learn from what has already happened.

Step 1. Identify your three greatest accomplishments

Even if this year was a challenging year for you, odds are if you look close enough there's something somewhere to be proud of.

Step 2. Analyze what you learned from each accomplishment

Now that you have identified your three greatest accomplishments, go back to each one. This time though identify exactly what you learned or were reminded of by each of them.

Step 3. Identify your biggest disappointments

Practically every company and individual resists analyzing their mistakes. That's a shame because this is where the best learning comes from.

Step 4. Analyze what you learned from each failure or disappointment

No matter how great everything in life is going - we all make mistakes. The trick here is to really analyze them, what preceded them, what could you have done differently, and how can you prevent them in the future.

Step 5. Identify how you limited yourself last year and how can you stop

Were there certain actions you took or didn't take that came back to haunt you? In order to make sure you don't limit yourself again - you need to bring these self-defeating actions to the surface, confront them, and most importantly determine what you must do differently to make sure you don't make the same mistakes all over again.

Step 6. Pragmatically review the information you have gathered

The goal of this exercise is not simply to know yourself and your business better but to actually use the information to make certain next year far surpasses this year.

What are the big takeaways from answering each question? What do you know about yourself or your business that you didn't realize or weren't thinking about?

Obviously, having this list isn't going to do it all, you still need to take this new knowledge and use it.

Fortunately, that's what the last question is centered around. And here it is...

Step 7: Use this Information to amaze yourself next year

The purpose here is to build in to your schedule, your interactions, your management style or whatever else you've surfaced in the previous questions and build yourself a new better approach.

New Year's Weight Loss & Diet Resolutions Made Easy

t's time of the year again when people celebrate the holidays and welcome the New Year. "Weight and diet is on the top 3 New Year's Resolutions for most people. Health and fitness is the case where haste makes waste, as the old saying goes. Many people start the new year with good momentum, then lose steam by the end of January," says Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer and fitness expert in Morris County, NJ.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey. 

By the end of January, one-third of people quit. Only half people still stay on their New Year's resolutions after 6 months. "That's a disappointing statistics,"Yang says.

"Lose weight, have a healthy fit, exercise regularly don't have to be that hard," Yang says. "It can be simple and easy if people review their past patterns and behaviors and answer a few questions."

The first step is to take a look at what your nutrition and exercise habits have been like for the last 12 months.

Think about questions like these and write down your answers in a notebook so that you can look back at them again a year from now:

- How does your weight compare with a year ago?
- Do you feel healthy and have a lot of energy or are you tired all the time?
- Do you take vitamins or other nutritional supplements?
- Do you eat at home most of the time? If so, what types of foods? Whole fresh foods, boxed foods or TV dinners?
- If you eat in a restaurant, what types of restaurants do you go to and what types of foods do you choose?
- How physically active are you? Do you exercise regularly?
- Do you eat healthy size portions, or do you stuff yourself with every meal?
- Do you smoke?
- How much alcohol do you drink each week?

It’s important to take an honest look at your health habits in order to set goals for your health and diet. The answers are in the questions.

Top 5 Ways to Beat the New Year's Resolution Syndrome



Morris County NJ personal trainer and fitness coach Carey Yang explains the New Year's Resolution Syndrome, how to set the right goals and provides proven strategies to cure it for good.

Losing weight and getting healthy rank the Top 3 New Year's Resolutions for most people. "You can witness this from the crazy crowd in the gym for the first two weeks after the New Year. People all over the world are searching for tips and advice in losing weight, building muscles, eating right, finding workout routines, and achieving six pack abs when the New Year Eve's ball drops," says Carey Yang, a certified personal trainer and fitness coach.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey.

Health and fitness is the case where haste makes waste, as the old saying goes. Many people start the new year with good momentum, then lose steam by the end of January. By February, most people already quit or visit the gym much less often.

One study from the University of Scranton showed that a quarter of people who resolve to lose weight and change their eating habits on January 1st will go back to their old ways within a week. By the end of January, one-third of people quit. Only half people still stay on their New Year's resolutions after 6 months.

"No wonder it's such as a big struggle for many people whether to make or not to make New Year's resolutions. They want to set goals and achieve them. On the other hand, they are also afraid of failing to keep the resolutions," Yang says.

Yang explains 5 common pitfalls when making New Year's resolutions and shares his strategies to beat the New Year's Resolution Syndrome.

1. Dream big but start small. Your old-and-never-worked resolution could be like "I resolve to start exercising 5 to 7 times a week, 30 to 60 minutes each time." If you haven't exercised regularly for the last 3 months, this resolution is bound to fail and you're doomed!

Start with small baby steps. Start with a combination of walking, aerobic exercise, strength training, and other physical activities for 2 to 3 times for a total accumulation of 2 hours of exercise a week. The key is to be able to get into a regular exercise habit. Gradually increase the duration, variety, intensity and frequency. This is one of the reasons why a personal trainer or fitness coach can be a really good source of professional guidance and accountability.

2. Make multiple resolutions that reinforce each other. When you make a healthy resolution, you'll start to re-think about falling back to those not-so-good habits.

Make multi-week, multi-month and multi-year resolutions. Why makes "annual" resolutions that you can only follow for a month? Have a big picutre. Break it down into smaller, realistic, achievable mini goals. You'll feel better when you accomplish the mini goals. It gives you more confidence and momentum to stay on track towards your bigger goals.

If you're still smoking or eating junk foods regularly, why do all the cardio and strength training? It just doens't make sense. You won't transform to your dream body even if you train 7 days while staying on the unhealthy lifestyle and poor eating habits.

3. Food is your friend, not your foe. Make a good friend with your foods. Every year, or in fact evey day, you'll see new diet books on the market. You lose money but not your weight. Food is the source of energy to fuel your body so that you can function and perform.  Eating healthy foods is the choice you can make. Replace the poor choices with healthy ones.

Pick two of your weak areas and consciously replace them with healthy choices and stay on them for a month. Similar to exercise, too much too soon is going to backfire. When you can stick to the two healthy choices for a month, then you start to include more healthy choices.

4. Get a good night sleep. Go to bed a half hour earlier. I know many people are eating late, snacking, drinking alcohols, watching TV shows in the evening to unwind their stress from the day. These poor habits disturbance your sleeping quality. They drain your energy and sabotage your resolutions if you want to lose weight and look good.

If you have followed the first three tips, you shouldn't be here. Your body releases growth hormones while you're sleeping that help you build muscle. Deprivation of sleep also makes you crave for sugary and high fat foods and make you wan to eat more to feel satisfied.

5. Watch your environment. When you want to lose weight and stay fit and healthy, you need to watch out who you're associated with. You are the product of five of your closest friends.

Obesity is epidemic and contagious. Some people call it "sympathetic weight gain" with your friends. On the other hand, thinness could be contagious too. See who has the upper hand over the other.

So stay close to your fit and healthy friends. But don't break up with your overweight friends as yet. Just be aware and stay conscious in your environments.

Stay away from sources that drain your energy and damage your health. Make friends with like-minded people who are positive, fit, healthy, high-energy and high-performance.

How to Motivate Your Spouse to Work Out Together with You

In a recent post about relationship traps to weight loss success, I have received great comments and feedback. Partner training for couples can be challenging for both clients and the fitness trainer.

One big obstacle before getting the couple to work out together is often that one is more motivated than the other to exercise. It can be very frustrating for the motivated one. Nagging is usually not working well.

As a personal trainer and fitness coach consulting, coaching and training many couples over the years, I find myself almost like a psychologist, a profiler, or  a mentalist. I have to put my head into their heads and think what they think like.

As a personal trainer, the easy part is design a partner workout program for the couple. The tough part is to get them started  and do it together.

We have to dig bigger and deeper to understand why people are doing or not doing what they know they're supposed to be doing. What really motivates them?

Remember, you can only change yourself.

Think and answer these questions.

What is motivation?

How do you get motivated and stay motivated?

Why do you want or need to work out?

Do you have the power to change your habit and behavior?

Why don't you have the burning desire to achieve the body you've alway wanted?

What's stopping you from achieving your goal?

Let's take a look at human behavior and self-determination theory (SDT). The SDT goes by that the more self-determined we are, the more we're doing what we want to do and aren't forced to do; therefore the happier and more successful we tend to be. Sounds logic and reasonable?

How Motivated Are You?

Five levels of motivation and type are categorized in the following.

Level 1: You have no particular reason for working out.
Motivation Type: Amotivation
No external or internal factors influence your activity, so no activity occurs.

Level 2: You work out because other people like you better when you're in shape.
Motivation Type: External Regulation
The mind responds to outside stimulii, though no internal motivation exists.

Level 3: You work out because you would feel bad about yourself if you didn't.
Motivation Type: introjected Regulation
Internal motivation begin to form, but limited positive outcome occurs.

Level 4: You work out because you believe it's important and beneficial for health and lifestyle.
Motivation Type: Identified Regulation
Motivations become more positive, resulting in prolonged positive behavior.

Level 5: You work out because you simply enjoy it.
Motivation Type: Intrinsic Motivation
Positive activity is performed for extended periods because of pleasure response.

So what's your level of motivation?

The less intrinsic your motivation for exercising is, the more you're working out because you think you should and because you really enjoy it - the less likely you are to stick with it.

If you accept this behavorial model, the next question is how do you transcend to the next level, eventually to Level 5 and stay at it?

Find the Good Reasons to Drive You to Succeed

Anything you do, no matter how simple, has a number of good reasons behind it. Not all the tasks have the good reasons to do them seen at first sight, but if you take just a few moments to analyse them, you will easily spot something good. We also have many tasks which don’t need any reasoning at all - we’ve been doing them for so long that they feel natural.

But if you’re ever stuck with some task you hate and there seems to be no motivation to complete it whatsoever, here’s what you need to do: find your good reasons. This applied to working out and eating healthy. They may not be obvious, but stay at it until you see some. This will bring your motivation back and will help you finish the task.

Too many people have the quick-fix mentality partly due to inaccurate weight-loss infomercials. They quit exercising when they don't see results in two weeks, 21 days or 30 days.
Health and fitness is not a 12-week program. It's a lifelong commitment.
What's Really Driving You?

Material reward? This is quite often. You will get paid for doing something you normally don’t like doing at all. External rewards and punishments do influence our behavior.

Personal gain or pleasure? You will learn something new or will perhaps improve yourself in a certain way. When we're kids playing baseball or any games because it's fun, not because we can put on muscles or stay healthy. We're driven to do things simply for their own sake.

Sense of accomplishment? At least you’ll be able to walk away feeling great about finding the motivation and courage to complete such a tedious task.

A step closer to your bigger goal? Even the biggest accomplishments in history have started small and relied on simple and far less pleasant tasks than you might be working on. Every task you complete brings you closer to the ultimate goal, and acknowledging this always feels good.

3 Hidden Relationship Traps to Your Weight Loss



As a personal trainer and fitness coach, I have consulted and trained many couples or partners over the years. It’s an eye-opening experience for me to see and listen how they interact with each other in different topics.
The weight issue is usually a very weighty issue.
As much as you love your partner, there bounds to be some differences that make you unique. The unique difference could cause tension between you and your partnership on your quest to weight loss and fitness.
Generally speaking, people start to get lazy and slack off once they’re in a steady relationship and after they’re married. According to a Minnesota Study, women add nearly 1 point to ther BMI (or about 7 pounds) while men put on an extra 0.7 (or roughly 5 pounds) during the early years of marriage.
One may be the meat-and-potato type. The other may be a vegetarian. One likes to eat pizza or cheeseburger and the other could be a soup-and-salad craze. One could be a gym rat while the other is a TV couch-potato.
Blaming and arguing with each other won’t get you closer in your relationship and to your goal weight. Here are 3 relationship fat traps and strategies to overcome them so that you and your partnership can maintain or even improve harmony in your relationship and shrink your waistline.
#1 Stop criticizing and teasing each other. Find the common ground and support each other. Instead of bashing on eating junk food, focus on healthy food choices and portions. Allow some occasional treats for satisfaction, not deprivation.
#2 Find fun activities and exercise together. It helps find quality time together and improve your relationship. Give the other the motivation.

The 8th Missing Habit of Highly Fit and Healthy People

I received great comments and feedback from my readers and clients on all the 7 habits of highly fit and healthy people.
However, deep in my mind, I feel something is still missing. Some of my clients say the same thing. I listed eating, exercise, making time, setting goal, water intake, no-dieting mindset and tracking program as the top 7 healthy habits — look pretty complete.
So, what else is missing?
After some thoughts and soul searching, I discover that these healthy habits are more about external changes and less about habitual programming and mindset changes for sustaining long term success. They’re more about an individual’s own behavioral changes, than influence from the environment.
Here it is that I name the 8th Missing Habit of Highly Fit and Healthy People:
#8 Habit: Sense of Involvement and Community
If you have top 7 habits and become too obsessed about them, you become a gym rat. You turn into a healthy freak. You isolate yourself from the outside world. You care only about yourself.
You may have a physically fit and healthy body but are lack of emotional health and maturity.
Highly fit and healthy people help and share with other people their success by promoting healthy and active lifestyle. They’re involved in their community in many different ways.
One of them is to participate in community services or charity fundraising events that benefit the disadvantages or for good causes. They have healthy hearts, and more than that, they  have BIG hearts that serve and help the community.

Denville, Morris County NJ Personal Trainer Carey Yang Enters 5K Race to Benefit Hurricane-Affected Denville NJ Merchants and Residents

Denville, Morris County NJ personal trainer Carey Yang has entered a 5K race to help raise fund to benefit local merchants and residents in Denville, New Jersey affected by Hurricane Irene in late August.

Yang is the owner and master personal trainer at Beyond Fitness Solutions, LLC -- a leading in-home personal training and weight-loss management company serving and helping clients in Morris County, Sussex County, Passaic County, Essex County and Somerset County areas in New Jersey. He is also an.AFAA-certified Biggest Loser® Pro Fitness Trainer.

Hurricane Irene blasted New Jersey in late August causing a lot of damages, power outage, and flooding. The downtown Denville area was flooded for days. Hundreds of homes and local stores were flooded, suffering from property damages. While most residents and businesses have been slowly recovering from the damages, some homes became inhabitable. Some businesses are still closed or in repair.

A local Denville resident for almost 12 years, Yang says, I'm lucky that my house is on the higher ground and only suffered from down tree branches and limbs and power outage. "The day after Hurricane Irene passed, I went close to downtown Denville area and visited my friends living near there. It was a horrible scene to watch. I simply can't imagine how the Mother Nature is so powerful causing such a tremendous damage," Yang adds.

Fundraising events have been underway for over a month. The next event is "Denville Up & Running" organized by a group of local residents and businesses to be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011. The 5K Run/Walk Race starts at 11 am. The whole fund raising event starts from 9 am to 6 pm including live music, entertainment, Denville merchant food, street festival, Denville Farmer's Market, 50/50 raffle and much more. All net proceeds go to benefit the Denville PAL Hurricane Relief Fund - a not-for-profit organization.

"I want to rally more friends, neighbors, business associates and my clients to join me and my family for supporting this fun and worthwhile event." Yang says.
